Ring’s End Bridge
Dear Readers and Residents of Darien,
This month marks our first year in publication and we couldn’t be more grateful to you for your welcome over the past 12 months. You prove with each issue we produce that there is a solid place in town for stories about the people, places and things that make us who we are, and take us beneath the surface of the many gifts that surround us. In this issue, we are pleased to take you into the Depot, Darien’s Youth Center. Under the new leadership of Darien’s Amy Daniels, building on the tremendous 20 years Janice Marzano spent there, the Depot is expanding, growing and shifting to meet the needs of kids today. It is a vital hub for our youth and we hope you enjoy learning about it as much as we did.
Andrew Armstrong, internationally-touring piano virtuoso and founder of New Canaan Chamber Music, subject of this month’s Art Show column, is a great guy, a local kid done good. He grew up in New Canaan and now brings world-renowned musicians to us in intimate, local concerts. Music crosses borders so beautifully and it’s only fitting that we did too for this article. Truly, you won’t want to miss what NCCM is doing just a few miles down the road.
In his interview, Andrew said, “The path to becoming interesting is to become endlessly interested.” We couldn’t agree more and it is this curiosity that drives what we do each issue.
…to Marian Castell’s article about the mid-century Modern work of John M. Johansen, a Harvard Five architect who built so prolifically in our area, including the gorgeous Darien home featured in this issue …to Darien psychologist Phyllis Weihs-Yavner’s column on resilience and the story behind Coromandel, our corner of India in Darien …to the recipe for Moroccan Stew contributed by Greens on the Go owner Alyssa Kadow, Linda Stephens’ article about health and fitness gimmicks, and the great efforts of Darien High Seniors Rachel Greca and Caroline Young and their club Feeding 500 to address hunger in our area.
As we settle into the New Year, we wish you endless curiosity, choices that challenge you and help you grow, happiness in what you do and the people you do it with, and the support we all need as we move through each day.
It is with pleasure and gratitude we welcome Palmer’s Market and Catering & Events to the magazine.
